What is SCADA system?
SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) includes hardware devices and monitoring software to support the management board tasks:
- Control all operations locally or remotely.
- Monitor, collect and process data in real time.
- Directly interact with industrial machines. For example, sensors, valves, pumps, motors, and HMI (human-machine interface) software.
- Auto-archive – records events in a log file.
Structure of SCADA system
Local measurement equipment includes: signal converters, sensors, motor valves, valve controllers, etc. These devices are responsible for measuring parameters.
Intermediate data acquisition stations include two types of devices: RTU and PLC.
- For RTU, the data collected from sensors is converted into usable data and sent to the monitoring center. The conversion process is done through the RTU microprocessor.
- For PLC, this is a communication device between the user and the sensors. PLC plays an important role in controlling and adjusting equipment and production processes.
The communication system will include telecommunication equipment, industrial communication networks and multiplexing devices having the function of transmitting field-level data to controllers and servers.
The controlling and monitoring level includes servers running SCADA software and HMI interface screens. SCADA software has the function of collecting data from the system transmitted by PLC + RTU devices. After that, the software directly sends control commands back. Besides, SCADA software handles, distributes and displays data through HMI devices to a system of networked devices such as HMI, end-user computing and servers.
