Industrial PC for SCADA: How to Choose the Right Solution

An industrial PC is a critical component in SCADA systems. High durability and reliable operation are essential requirements for this type of equipment. The manufacturing cost of an industrial PC is not low, and the investment cost for customers is also significant. Therefore, selecting the right industrial PC configuration for a SCADA system to optimize cost, especially in turnkey automation projects, while considering application needs and future scalability, is an important topic worth discussing.

Industrial PC for standalone SCADA applications

A standalone SCADA system consists of one or multiple intelligent devices. These devices communicate with an industrial PC running SCADA software to perform SCADA operations. This system typically requires only a single industrial PC to run SCADA.

The scale of a standalone SCADA system is usually small to medium. Therefore, a fanless industrial PC with a low-power consumption processor is commonly used in such systems.

For SCADA systems with fewer than 256 tags (memory areas on devices used for control, monitoring, and data acquisition), an industrial PC with a low-power Celeron U-series CPU, 8GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD is a suitable choice.

Customers can consider the ATBOX G3 model from Eglobal or the NUC-APL-33-B1-01R model from Avalue as appropriate options.

Industrial PC models ATBOX G6 or EPC-SKLU

For standalone SCADA systems with fewer than 1024 tags, you can use a fanless industrial PC with a configuration including an Intel Core i5 (4th generation or higher), a low-power U-series CPU, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD.

Suitable options include the ATBOX G6 or ATBOX GK1 from Eglobal, or the EPC-SKLU series from Avalue.

Industrial touchscreen PC models ATBOX EG-800 J1900 and Avalue LPC-1209

For systems that require a wall-mounted touchscreen or panel-mounted installation, an all-in-one industrial PC with an integrated touchscreen is a suitable choice.

The ATBOX EG-800 J1900 or the Avalue LPC-1209 are recommended options for such applications.

For SCADA systems with 2048 tags or power SCADA system, especially in power quality monitoring, it is recommended to choose a dedicated and powerful central SCADA server. with strong configurations such as an Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD, including models like ATBOX G4, G8, or Avalue EPC-SKLU., SCADA clients should also use low-power U-series industrial PC models such as ATBOX G3 or Avalue NUC-APL-33-B1-01R or higher.

For SCADA systems with 2048 tags or power SCADA system, it is recommended to choose a dedicated and powerful central SCADA server, such as Dell R250 (up to around 8,192 tags) or Dell R450 (up to around 32,764 tags). These servers should be installed in a proper server room with air conditioning, rack cabinets, backup power, and redundant Ethernet networks to ensure stable system operation. SCADA clients should still use fanless, low-power industrial PC models as mentioned above.

Industrial PC for distributed SCADA applications over the Internet

The internet is an open and complex network environment. Therefore, distributed SCADA systems over the internet must face risks such as cyberattacks that can disrupt operations, including data theft, production formula leaks, or unauthorized control of factory systems. For this reason, the SCADA server should be a stable solution and hosted in a secure, high-reliability data center such as Viettel IDC.

Customers can rent a VPS (Virtual Private Server) at Viettel IDC for Cloud SCADA applications with up to 4,096 tags.

For larger SCADA systems, they should use a physical server at Viettel IDC. This option supports better scalability.

They can choose Dell R240 for up to 8,192 tags or Dell R450 for up to 32,764 tags.

Special Applications

In some special applications, such as using an industrial PC in transportation vehicles like trucks, forklifts, or ships, requirements for shock and vibration resistance are critical.

For industrial PC applications in hospitals, anti-bacterial surfaces and easy cleaning capabilities are essential.

For outdoor applications or harsh environments with high temperature and humidity, specialized industrial PC models are required to withstand heat, moisture, water, and dust.

The above are some analyses and recommendations for selecting an industrial PC for SCADA applications. If you need further consultation or support, please contact us via hotline. Thank you.
